What is Scar Therapy?
Scar tissue is less functional than normal tissue. As your body heals after an injury or surgery, scar tissue forms. Scar tissue is fibrotic and less mobile than pre-injury tissue. Adhesions may form, sticking together layers under the skin which can cause, pain, tightness, itching and restriction of movement.
The Restore Scar Therapy method is a gentle, non-invasive physical therapy developed to treat scar tissue, fibrosis and adhesions, using specialist scar massage and fascial release, therapy tools and self-care advice to promote healthy recovery.
How can Scar Therapy help?
- Reduce common symptoms such as pain, sensitivity and itching
- Improve the appearance of scars
- Release tightness and improve mobility
- Support emotional wellbeing by encouraging self-care of scar
- Stimulate and promote natural healing
- Promote functional improvements after surgery or injury
The Restore Scar Therapy method has been developed by the UK's leading scar therapy teacher and scar specialist, Emma Holly. It is used within the NHS and leading private healthcare providers. A course of treatment is usually recommended, but a single session and self-care advice for you to follow at home can be helpful.
Scar Therapy can be combined with Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage to promote healing and to help reduce swelling, pain and discomfort and this is often recommended by medical professionals following surgery.

What is Post-Operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is often recommended by surgeons as an essential part of the healing process following cosmetic or reconstructive surgery. It helps the body cleanse and resolve into the best shape, which gives a better aesthetic result. Without it sometimes the skin and underlying tissue may not heal as quickly and/or develop hard lumps.
- Speeds up wound healing
- Helps reduce inflammation and pain
- Promotes deep relaxation aiding recovery
- Helps soft tissue heal smoothly reducing visible scarring
Appointments
Your initial appointment must be once your scar has fully healed, or in the case of post-operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage, this can be as soon as your surgeon advises you that treatment is possible. If you are attending within the first 8 weeks after a surgery, or have had a complex procedure, it may be necessary for me to converse with your surgeon or consultant prior to your scar therapy (with your agreement) to ensure that I can deliver the best care.
At your appointment, I will guide you through ways to care for your scar at home. You may choose to return for a follow up appointment, or simply follow the personalised recommendations given at your appointment and continue with self-care at home.
